Jacques Lacan Speaks

 link vimeo

Jacques Marie Émile Lacan (French pronunciation: [ʒak lakɑ̃]) (April 13, 1901 -- September 9, 1981) was a French psychoanalyst and psychiatrist who made prominent contributions to psychoanalysis, philosophy, and literary theory. Giving yearly seminars in Paris from 1953 to 1981, Lacan influenced France's intellectuals in the 1960s and the 1970s, especially the post-structuralist philosophers. His interdisciplinary work is Freudian, featuring the unconscious, the castration complex, the ego, identification, and language as subjective perception. His ideas have had a significant impact on critical theory, literary theory, twentieth-century French philosophy, sociology, feminist theory and clinical psychoanalysis (though not on clinical psychology).

Death
belongs to the realm of faith
You're right to believe you will die
It sustains you
If you didn't believe it could you bear the life you have?
If we couldn't totally rely
on the certainty that it will end..how could you bear all this?
Nevertheless, it is only an act of faith
And the worst thing about it is that you're not sure
Why can't one of us live to be 150 years olf ?
But even so...
that's where the act of faith
becomes so strong
And the midst of all this..the reason I'm telling you...
is because I've seen it

One of my patients, a long time ago...
you won't have heard of her or I wouldn't be telling you
Anyway, she suddenly dreamed that she source of existence
would spring forever from her
The Pascalian dream,an infinity of lives descending from her...
in an endless line
She woke up half mad
She told me that, and I assure you she didn't find it funny
So there you are
Life
that's the solid base on which we live
As soon as we start talking about life as such
that life we live
there's no doubt about it...
we're aware of it all the time...
it's a question of thought of seeing life as a concept
There was a time when people believed psychoanalysts knew something
..........................................
That view is no longer very widespread
The worst thing is,analysts no longer believe it themselves
In that they are wrong
In fact, they know quite a chunk
It's exactly like the unconscious in its true definition:
they don't know that they know

Transference is love

But why do we love someone like that ?
Let's leave the matter there...
I gave it a formula...
I was talking about transference...in terms...
which are ..full of traps
that's not unusual everything I say traps
Why on earth would I say it was about something else..
when it's about the unconscious ?
We konw that language never gives, never allows us to formulate..
anything but things which have
three,five,twenty-five meanings
The subjest presumed to know
